Website Description: In 1949 at Rochester, New York Harry Vincent from Troy and
Nathaniel West of Rochester answered an invitation from M. Smith
Thomas of Buffalo to meet together to discuss the desirability of
working for the common good of all retired NEW YORK STATE
educators. Reaching consensus on that goal, the origins of
NYSRTA began with what we now know to be Western, Central
Western and the Eastern zones. A second meeting in 1951 added
Central, Southern and Southeastern zones, while Robert R.
Decormier of Poughkeepsie was elected the first president, a post
in which he served faithfully for fifteen years.
